- Over 650 buses have been purchased for the
JUTC at a cost in excess of $4 billion
- The company until recently employed over 3, 400
persons including drivers and conductors. Following
an audit of its operations by Swedish consultants
the number of workers has been reduced to 3000
to achieve greater efficiency. Key sectors of
our operations including top management have
been reorganized
- Training and refresher courses have been provided
for all drivers,
mechanics and supervisors
- Specially designed buses have been introduced
for physically challenged persons
- The Premium Express service was recently introduced
to operate between the city and ten Spanish
Town and Portmore communities. Thirteen air-conditioned
48-seater luxury buses that are manned by single-operators
offer personalized service to persons living
in the suburbs
- New depots have been constructed at Portmore
and Windward Road at a
cost of $300 million
- The JUTC Smart Card has been introduced as
the alternative way to pay buys fares. Just
over twelve thousand cards have been sold in
the first three months utilizing 10 outlets.
Another 73 outlets are to be established

- Since the last adjustment in fares in May
2001 there has been increases
in fuel costs
- Government subsidizes the lease costs of $700
million for the depots,
buses and wreckers
- The JUTC currently collects $29.00 per passenger
for each
kilometer traveled
- It actually costs the JUTC $30.99 per kilometer
per passenger
- The company therefore loses $12.22 per kilometer
for each
passenger it transports
